Let’s get down to business now. Academic writing typically falls into three categories: writing to inform, writing to persuade, and writing to evaluate. (All three forms actually engage in persuasion; however, writing to persuade is more explicitly focused on proving an argument.)

Channeling Information: Writing to Inform

When you write to inform, your goal is to convey information clearly to your audience. The information may be about something that happened, how to do something, what something is, and so on. To convey information clearly is a straightforward but challenging goal: it requires you to express ideas clearly and in a logical order, and to bear in mind the audience for whom you are writing.
